Breast augmentation is an extremely popular procedure. Many women, however, believe that implants are the only way to change the size of the breast. Fat grafting, which includes transferring fat from another part of the body, is another way to increase breast size. A fat transfer is also an option for women after they’ve had a mastectomy.
During a fat grafting procedure, fat tissue is removed from another part of the body (typically the thighs, belly, or buttocks) using liposuction. The fat tissue is processed to leave only the pure fat and the fat stem cells and injected into the breast, which recreates the breast or slightly increases its size.
Fat grafting and breast implants both have pros and cons. If you are looking for a substantial increase in size in the breast, you should consider implants. Implants will always maintain their shape and size over time. Fat grafting cannot increase breast size more than one cup size. Plus, the body may absorb the fat injected into the breast over time, resulting in a loss of volume.
Recovery from a fat grafting procedure is also longer than breast implants, because the patient is recovering from liposuction and fat grafting, which can take 3-6 month to see the final result and can require a second treatment to get the desired results. However, many women are pleased with the look and feel of their fat-grafted breast, reporting it is softer and natural. Fat grafting also removes fat from an area you may be displeased with.
The decision between a fat grafting transfer and breast implants depends on your current situation and health, and your aesthetic goals. Talk with a plastic surgeon about the benefits and disadvantages of both to make an informed decision.
