Whether you are experiencing a double chin and excess fat around your neck, or you feel like you are developing a wrinkled, wiggley “turkey neck,” we all know the importance of an attractive neck. After all, who wants to hang a beautiful necklace or an amazing bow tie around a flabby or jiggly neck?! So the question now is how do I know if I need a neck lift or liposuction? Read on to discover which treatment may be best for you!
What Is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift helps improve the most visible signs of aging through removal and redistribution of excess fat deposits, tightening of underlying muscles and removal of sagging skin. During neck lift surgery, fat will be removed, the muscles are tightened, and the underlying neck skin tissue is repositioned to give a smoother and firmer look. This surgery takes an average of 1 to 3 hours and recovery from a neck lift can take several weeks. Most patients return to work in one or two weeks, but some swelling may still be present even after a few weeks have passed. Patients will notice improvements immediately and full results will be visible in a few weeks once the swelling and bruising have subsided.
What Is Neck Liposuction?
Neck liposuction is a procedure that removes excess fat from the neck and chin. It can create a firmer, smoother, and more defined neck and jawline. It is important to note that neck liposuction removes excess fat but cannot improve sagging skin. The procedure is done under local or general anesthesia. An incision is made under the chin and possibly one behind each ear where a small cannula and vacuum gently remove fat. The procedure lasts 30 to 60 minutes. Patients often experience minimal bruising and swelling for up to 4 weeks, but light activities can be resumed in 2 to 4 days. Patients will notice a leaner look to their neck and jawline once all swelling has subsided.
Which One Do I Need?
If you are hoping to improve the appearance of your neck and jawline, here are a few things to consider:
- Liposuction only addresses excess fat.
- A neck lift can address loose skin on the neck, loss of muscle tone, and loss of volume.
- An in-person consultation is the best way to determine which course of treatment is best for your individual needs.
