You wake up one morning with an unusual rash or breakout on your skin, or perhaps you’ve noticed a mole you have been watching has started changing in size or appearance. It’s time to take action in order to care for your body’s largest organ, your skin. It is important that you choose the best dermatologist to care for it. Now, what should you consider when making this important decision?

Credentials

A critical first step in choosing a dermatologist is to check their credentials. Patients can search online to ensure that their dermatologist is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology or The American Osteopathic Association. Most doctors provide their biographies on their websites. Then, patients can discover additional years of supervised study, research in which the doctor has been involved, and other specialties, awards, and honors. Once you’ve selected a doctor or practice, reading online patient surveys and recommendations can also provide valuable insight.

Schedule an Appointment

Once you have narrowed your search for a dermatologist, it is important to schedule an appointment.  When you arrive, pay attention to how the staff greets you. Once you choose a doctor, you will be encountering the staff routinely and expert care begins in the waiting room.

When the doctor arrives in your examination room, pay attention to his or her communication skills:

  • Does the doctor listen well and respond thoroughly to your questions?
  • Does he or she take their time or just rush in and out?
  • Does the doctor seem to be pushing products or effectively listening, examining, and diagnosing?

Since skin issues can often point to other internal problems, it is extremely important that your dermatologist takes the time to be thorough. Once you feel comfortable that the dermatologist is one you like and trust, be sure to follow all treatment plans given to you for the very best results.
