Pregnancy is a beautiful time in a woman’s life. The anticipation of adding a baby to your family and the excitement of getting ready for his or her arrival brings joy to the expectant parents. However, when you are pregnant, your breasts will change due to hormonal fluxes. Breasts may enlarge or change shape during pregnancy and changes can continue until you stop breastfeeding. Like many women, you may be wondering if the pregnancy will change your implants. Continue reading for answers to this question.

Types of Breast Implants

First of all, it is important to note that breast implants will not impair your ability to breastfeed nor cause any complications with hormonal breast changes during the pregnancy. There are two main types of breast implants and each could be impacted differently. Here are the basics:

  • Subpectoral implants go under the muscles in your chest. These are supported and buffered by your muscles and therefore breast changes will not affect them.
  • Subglandular implants are those that are placed above the muscles and are supported by the breast tissue. Since the breast tissue changes during pregnancy, it is highly likely that there will be changes in the appearance of your implants after the pregnancy. The changes that are usually noticed are less breast firmness and more sagging than before pregnancy. Some women say that their implants look more natural after pregnancy and are pleased with the end result. Other women opt for breast lifts after they are finished having children to restore their pre-pregnancy look.

Breast Implant Consultations Available

If you have breast implants and are currently pregnant, you can be confident that your implants will not hinder your pregnancy or breastfeeding. While there may be changes in the look of your breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding, there is a possibility that any changes you experience will be subtle and not require any type of revision surgery after you have had all the children you are planning for your family.

For those who are contemplating implants and child-bearing is still in your future, you can feel comfortable that having implants will not cause problems with having and breastfeeding children. However, depending on your individual needs, a consultation with your plastic surgeon can help you decide whether to have your breast implants done before or after you have your family.

Dr. Jamie Moenster was the first surgeon to tell me the best way forward in my situation. She was highly conscious of risks and very honest in conveying them. I felt like she was the right surgeon and I am not disappointed. I had a great overall experience and am healing well after a tricky surgery. The office staff and physician’s assistants were all wonderful to me. I am eternally grateful and highly recommend this practice, especially Dr. Moenster.
