How Long is the Recovery from Breast Augmentation?

Many women are extremely self-conscious about the size of their breasts. We have been taught to try to be satisfied with the body we were given while clothing ads show women with great cleavage modeling adorable blouses. Then when we try on dresses and tops and the bustline sags, it’s just downright discouraging.

Breast augmentation surgeries are performed so a woman can achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look that will boost her self-esteem and give her the confidence she needs to tackle life. If you are contemplating breast augmentation, we would like to give you an overview of the recovery process.

Am I A Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

If you’re unhappy with the size or shape of your breasts, you’re most likely a candidate for breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is a highly personal procedure and should only be considered and done because it will satisfy you and not someone else.

You may be a candidate for breast augmentation if:

  • You are physically healthy and you aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You are dissatisfied with your breasts losing shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss or with aging
  • You are unhappy with your lack of cleavage
  • Your breasts are asymmetrical
  • You are over the age of 18

What Is Recovery from Breast Augmentation Like?

Because every woman’s body and needs are unique, there is no exact timeline for the recovery process. With that being said, most surgeons agree that full recovery takes place within 6 to 8 weeks.

Many women even feel back to normal sooner than that. Your surgeon will be able to assess your needs and give you a more specific timeline.

Immediately After Surgery

When you awaken from surgery, you will find that there will be bandages and compression garments on the surgical site. There is typically some swelling and bruising after the procedure. The first few days will be the most uncomfortable, but you will have prescription pain medications to help you navigate the pain for the first few days. After that, most women find that over-the-counter pain medication will curb the pain.

You will be required to wear a post-operative soft, stretchy bra at all times after this surgery. This provides stability, aids in circulation, and assists with proper drainage. You will be asked to avoid sleeping on your stomach or on your side in any way that puts pressure on your breasts.

The First Few Weeks

After the first week of recovery, women are encouraged to slowly get back into light normal daily routine. Pain should be minimal during the second week and following weeks, but you will be required to refrain from strenuous activities and any activity that involves bouncing movements, such as running and jumping.

Patients with jobs that require light to minimal activity can return to work during the first or second week. Women with jobs that require strenuous activity should stay out of work for a minimum of 3 weeks.

Week Four and Following

Your surgeon will evaluate your progress after the first few weeks and be able to see how well your healing has progressed. During these visits, the surgeon will give you any further instructions regarding your recovery, but in general, breast augmentation patients return to work and normal activities after the fourth week of recovery. Patients will generally be completely recovered and cleared for all activities by 8 weeks.
