What’s the first thing that pops into your head when you think of male plastic surgery? Maybe you start to wonder what procedures males typically have done. Is there a way to achieve a more youthful look without so much downtime? Or maybe you’re worried about turning into Spock!
In a feature with American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Dr. Jamie Moenster and Dr. Karen Horton, address these questions in a sit-down interview about the most popular surgeries and treatments they see men getting in their plastic surgery practices.
As a Board-certified Plastic Surgeon in Tucson, Dr. Moenster believes that each plastic surgery patient has distinctive needs, wants, and desires. By taking the necessary time to listen to you in your consultation, she will tailor an individualized, personal treatment or surgical plan to help meet your aesthetic goals.
Dr. Moenster: Your husband’s had some treatment on and so has mine. Tell me a little bit about what’s popular with men in your practice.
Dr. Horton: I’d say the most popular treatment is liposuction – really from cheekbones down. Most men who come to see me, they’re already fit but they just have one little stubborn area. So liposuction is really the go to. I think it’s nice because it’s friendly, there’s not a lot of down time, and it just helps them feel like when they look in the mirror they’re actually seeing the results that they’re working so hard to get.
Dr. Moenster: Yeah! I think another area for men that they really like is underneath the chin. Especially if they wear a shirt and tie. They start to get that little area and it’s something that other people see so it’s a really nice place for both men and women to be treated.
Dr. Horton: How do you like to treat under the chin area?
Dr. Moenster: I will use injectables under the chin area. I like the deoxycholic acid (Kybella). I think it works really great. It is something that’s pretty safe for everybody and there’s not a lot of
downtime, which is always a great thing for patients.
The other thing I see in my practice is upper eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. I think a lot of men as they age, start to get that extra skin there. When we talk to people it’s the first place we look and so it’s a really great introductory surgery to rejuvenation.
Dr. Horton: How do you design your blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery for men differently than for women?
Dr. Moenster: You have to take into consideration the differences in the anatomy between men and women and the effect. Men don’t want a real wide-eyed look. They just want to look younger and more youthful. You don’t want to distort the brow or raise the brow to make it look too feminine for most men.
What else are you seeing men do in your practice? Do you do a lot of neurotoxins in men?
Dr. Horton: There’s a lot of men who come to my office for neurotoxins. And again, they want to look natural. They want to look refreshed but they don’t want to look frozen. They don’t want the Spock look and they don’t want to look weird. So I think after they get to know us and they know that our aesthetic in the office is also natural, then we establish some really good trust. So there’s a lot of men in my office.
Dr. Moenster: Yeah my husband does it (neurotoxins). He actually did it before I did. It was something that he really enjoyed. Making him look more youthful and more rested.
