What Is A Thigh Lift?

A Thigh Lift is a procedure in which the thighs are reshaped by removing excess skin and fat. This improves the contours and appearance of the thighs. This procedure is used when the skin elasticity is poor and the skin won’t shrink back to its original state.

What Happens During a Thigh Lift?

This procedure is typically done at a surgical center under general anesthesia and takes approximately 2 to 4 hours. It consists of inner thigh contouring or outer thigh or both.

During the inner thigh contouring, an incision is made from the groin towards the knee on the inner thigh or along the panty line area in the groin. The underlying tissue is reshaped and tightened. Excess skin is removed.

For outer thigh contouring, an incision is made from the groin around the hip. Fat is removed, tissue shaped and excess skin is removed. Sutures are put in the underlying areas and near the skin. Drains are commonly put in place for 1-2 weeks.

What Is Recovery from a Thigh Lift Like?

When you awaken from surgery there will be dressings and bandages on the incision sites. You will have compression garments on the area to help combat the swelling that commonly occurs with this type of procedure. Some swelling and bruising is to be expected and drains may also be present. The sutures and drains will be removed in 1 to 2 weeks after your surgery.

Because incisions are in the thigh area, they are subject to tension and pulling when you sit, stand, walk, and bend. This will improve as you heal. This can make the first two weeks of your recovery process frustrating, but taking your pain relief medications, minimizing movement, and wearing your compression garments will help you tremendously as your body heals. You will have follow up visits with your surgeon so that sutures and drains can be removed and your progress can be monitored.

As a general rule, non-strenuous work can be resumed in 2 weeks. More strenuous activities will have to be stopped for 4-6 weeks. By the 6-8th week, full activities can be resumed and you will be looking and feeling great.
