Laser Vein Treatment

Varicose and spider veins can appear on the legs, face, or other places on the body as we age. They are the result of damaged veins that allow blood to flow backward, back into the vein. They can be caused by genetics, lifestyle, or hormonal changes. During laser vein treatment, your provider directs the laser light at the vein, collapsing the vein. At Dermatology & Plastic Surgery of Arizona, the providers use the Nordlys System. This system utilizes Nd:YAG 1064 technology to treat a wide range of vascular conditions.

Am I a Candidate?

Those who have not had success with conservative treatments for their varicose or spider veins, including compression stockings or weight loss, are good candidates for laser vein treatment. Those who would benefit from laser vein treatment include those with:

  • Varicose veins that are small to medium in size, protruding or unsightly.
  • Purple or red small veins that are noticeable to others.
  • Skin over the varicose veins that has changes in texture or color.

How does the laser work to treat veins?

During laser vein treatment, your veins are targeted with a high-intensity light. Because the laser is focused it is careful not to affect nearby skin, tissue, and veins. As the laser heats up, the blood vessels are constricted and the vein is destroyed. Over a period of four to six weeks, the vein is reabsorbed by the body and decrease or disappear.

The Nordlys System utilizes Nd:YAG 1064 technology to treat a variety of vascular conditions, including leg veins, vascular lesions, venous lakes, and port wine stains. This treatment is paired with SoftCool technology which leads to greater comfort during and after your treatment.

Is laser vein treatment safe?

The risks involved with laser treatment include temporary skin burns or discoloration. Most doctors recommend trying conservative treatment methods before laser vein treatment. Sclerotherapy of the veins is an alternative to laser treatments.

Does it hurt?

Most patients report that laser vein treatment has minimal discomfort. The SoftCool technology used with the Frax 1550 laser and Nd:YAG 1064 laser utilizes advanced air cooling technology in order to keep the skin comfortable during treatment.

How long does treatment usually take?

Treatment time is based upon how much area is being treated.  The average treatment time is 15-30 minutes. These laser treatments offer more power than other lasers, offering more power than its competitors and allowing for more treatments in the same time frame. The Nordlys System is exceptional for it’s ability to be highly customizable.
