PRP for Hair Loss

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma and is a therapy that promotes healing in injured joints. Our blood is made of red blood cells, and plasma. High concentrations of platelets in plasma cells help promote hair growth by prolonging the growing phase of the hair cycle.

The main benefits of PRP for hair loss include:

  • Nonsurgical procedure
  • Safe and reliable results
  • Quick recovery period
  • Natural looking results
  • Uses your own platelets, no risk of infection

Candidates

Men or women experiencing hair loss are good candidates for PRP treatments, but those with early hair loss tend to respond best.

Procedure

During a PRP procedure, your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets and plasma. The plasma is then injected into the scalp where hair loss has occurred, which helps repair blood vessels, promote cell growth and wound healing, and stimulate collagen production.

Patients typically undergo injections monthly for three months, then every three or four months for up to two years. The injection schedule will depend on your genetics, pattern and amount of hair loss, age and hormones. If injections aren’t your thing, you can now opt to use our new anesthesia option called Pronox, which is a patient-controlled inhaled analgesia that takes effect in seconds and immediately relieves anxiety and discomfort.

Recovery, Risks, and Results

Ice packs and Tylenol may be used to minimize pain after PRP procedure. Bruising and redness can occur but usually resolves within a week or two. Because PRP uses your own platelets, there is little to no risk of a negative reaction.

Most patients see decreased hair shedding, followed by regrowth and increased length of hair. Treatments every three to six months on a long-term basis is the best way to stimulate the growth factors associated with regrowth and stopping hair fallout. PRP should be a part of a multifaceted program to treat hair thinning and loss that can include over the counter topical treatments.
